What Are The Dangers Of Regular Energy Drinks?

Increases Blood Pressure

It is no secret that most regular energy drinks contain extreme amounts of sucrose and caffeine. This can result in raised blood pressure, which can lead to conditions such as arrhythmia, where the heart starts to beat abnormally.

A recent study that was conducted,  involved 68 healthy volunteers at the age of 25 who were divided into two groups. The first group drank water, and the second one consumed 3 standard energy drinks containing 80mg of caffeine at one-hour intervals.

Results showed that the group who consumed regular energy drinks had a significant increase in blood pressure, putting them at risk of damaging narrowed arteries, and potential aneurysms. They even conducted a second study with more candidates which resulted in a similar outcome.

Caffeine Withdrawal

Caffeine functions as a stimulant for our central nervous system, helping to increase neural brain activity and alertness while reducing the feeling of fatigue.

It is easy for the body to become highly dependant on caffeine. When this happens, you may experience withdrawal symptoms that can start taking effect after 12 to 24 hours from the time you drank your last beverage.

Some common caffeine withdrawal symptoms can include:

  • Headache
  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Decreased energy
  • Tremors
  • Difficulty concentrating

Increases Risk Of Cardiovascular Disease

Research shows that consuming too many energy drinks within short periods of time or drinking them too frequently can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Too much synthetic caffeine and sucrose can have a negative impact on how your heart functions and can cause damage to the arteries. This can lead to life-threatening conditions, such as stroke or heart attack.

Can Lead To Type 2 Diabetes

Consuming too much artificial sugar or can cause your body to stop producing sufficient amounts of insulin, which is responsible for converting sucrose into energy. This is also known as type 2 diabetes.

May Increase Stress, Anxiety And Nervousness

Studies show that drinking an excessive amount of energy drinks can increase the production of norepinephrine, a chemical in the body that sends signals throughout our central nervous system. This chemical lets our brain know when there is a stressful event or situation.

According to a study done by Mayoclinic, the overproduction of norepinephrine can increase cardiovascular risk due to increased blood pressure, even in healthy individuals. This is primarily due to synthetic ingredients, including caffeine and sucrose.

Too much production of norepinephrine can also lead to constant stress, anxiety, and feelings of nervousness, even though small or insignificant situations.

What Are Organic Energy Drinks?

Organic energy drinks are formulated to provide you with a boost of energy using herbs, vitamins, minerals, and natural caffeine, instead of chemicals or synthetic ingredients, which are typically found in regular energy drinks. They can be a great alternative for those who don’t like coffee.

They should be free of any pesticides and must contain natural ingredients. Also, they should not contain any artificial preservatives or flavors. In a nutshell, organic energy drinks are simply healthier and safer alternatives that focus on overcoming fatigue or tiredness using natural ingredients.

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Organic Energy Drinks

Since the topic of energy drinks is highly questionable and concerning to many, we listed both the advantages and disadvantages of consuming these beverages, so you know exactly what to expect:

Why Are Organic Energy Drinks A Better Alternative?

Helps Promote Natural Energy Production

Because organic drinks focus on providing alertness using herbs, vitamins, minerals and clean ingredients, they can actually help your body produce energy naturally. They also have less sugar content and contain natural sources of caffeine, which reduces crashing, withdrawals, and insulin spikes.

This all being said, it is important to keep in mind that the ingredients in these beverages can never replace nutrition found in whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats. Remember to always stick to a proper diet and never rely on energy drinks as a primary source of nutrition.

Can Help Boost Immune System

Since healthy energy drinks contain high amounts of rich nutrients and antioxidants, they can provide rewarding benefits for your immune system. Most of these products also contain plant-based phyto-compounds, which help to fight off free radical and dangerous cells that are linked to illness.

Fewer Calories

Because there are no artificial flavors or sweeteners found in natural energy drinks, they will contain fewer calories per serving. This can help you manage or lose weight, and help you leave room for consuming more calories from whole foods throughout the day.

No Crash, No Jitters

Organic energy drinks do not contain any artificial caffeine or synthetic sugars. Better yet, they don’t have excessive amounts of either of the two. This is because they are intended to provide you with energy using natural ingredients such as herbs, vitamins, and minerals instead of just caffeine and sweeteners.

As a result, you won’t have any sugar crashes or jitters, which are commonly experienced after drinking regular energy drinks.

What Are The Worst Energy Drinks Out There?

Have you ever wondered what the most dangerous energy drinks are out there? Below, we listed the top 3 worst energy drinks (from worst)  that you should stay away from.

#1. Full Throttle

First in place is Full Throttle Energy Drink. One serving is 8oz according to the label, and each can contains a whopping 29g of sugar, which is the perfect recipe for heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. On top of it all, there is 80mg of sodium and 80mg of caffeine, which can further increase your risk of stroke and other forms of heart disease.

This is undeniably one of the worst beverages for your health and is highly recommended that you stay away from any beverage containing this much sugar, sodium, and caffeine content.

Many people who consume this energy drink will drink the entire can, meaning they are intaking a total of 58g of sugar, 160 mg of sodium, and 160 mg of caffeine (or 2.5 cups of coffee)!

#2. Monster

Second in line, we have Monster Energy Drink. This product has a terrible history of deaths due to the high amounts of sucrose and caffeine content.

One serving is 8 ounces, where you will find 28 grams of sugar, 85mg of caffeine, and just over 110% DV in B vitamins. Due to the high sugar content, this energy drink can put you at risk of heart disease, weight gain, and blood sugar problems such as diabetes.

This one is to be avoided at all costs if you want to prevent future health complications.

#3. RedBull

Next, we have the popular Red Bull Energy drink. This energy drink is similar to Monster when it comes to ingredients. It contains 27g of sugar per 8.4 fl.oz can, with over 250% DV of vitamin b6, and 80mg of caffeine, which is 5mg less than Monster.

Because its so similar to Monster, this Energy drink makes the #3 spot on our list for the worst energy drink out there.

What Should You Look For When Choosing An Organic Energy Drink?

Caffeine Content

You will find that some organic energy drinks do not contain much, if any caffeine. If they do, make sure that it comes from a natural source.

Mayo Clinic recommends that healthy adults should not exceed more than 400 milligrams of caffeine per day.

Children are to avoid caffeine, and anyone who is sensitive or is on medications should always consult a doctor before consuming beverages such as energy drinks.

Sugar Content

Some organic energy drinks will still contain large amounts of sucrose. However, do not be alarmed. As long as the sugar is non-synthetic and is derived from natural sources, you’ll be fine.

Also, be sure to not exceed over 35g. Aiming for 25g or less will guarantee no crash, and minimize your calorie intake. Also, if you see a product claiming 0g of sugar, make sure to check the label to see if there are any artificial sweeteners or flavors.

Make sure you look for all the key signs indicating that the product does in-fact contain organic ingredients. The first thing I look for is a label that says USDA Organic.

If for whatever reason you do not see a stamp that clearly states that the product is organic, then look at the list of ingredients. If you see any chemicals or long scientific phrases you cannot pronounce, then most likely it is not organic.

Ingredients such as niacin, vitamin B, protein, green tea extract, as well as fruit and vegetable extracts are all great natural sources of energy that you should look for.
